Green Vellum Bindings

Postby gabrielle fox » Thu Dec 10, 2009 10:17 am

Has anyone come across green vellum bindings? I have been told that green is often associated with early medical texts and have seen several older medical bindings in green vellum. The latest I have just found is a sixteenth century mathematical book bound in limp green vellum.

The example that I have seen is green vellum on board published in France, a book of poetry dating from 1771.

...I also asked an acquaintance, a book collector who teaches about the history of medicine if he had seen many old medical books in green vellum and he said no.

Jan, I have been looking for any information I could find on green vellum bindings, looking on databases and asking bookbinder acquaintances, but as of yet, I haven't been able to find anything. We will certainly keep our ears open for anything relating to this type of binding, and post here when we find any more information.
