Karl Meyer

Karl Meyer learned the trade in North Bergen, New Jersey at the knee of his father Walter in the family tannery. During this time he went to school to earn a degree in chemical engineering as he knew it would be a great benefit when he was creating the formulas for the hides. After college, he was drafted into the Marines during the Viet Nam era.  Stationed in Okinawa for his term of service, he came back to the family business when his tour of duty was complete. With his chemical knowledge, he was able to create never-before-seen colors and leather finishes. These formulas have been passed down to his son, Jesse who continues to use them to this day.

Eventually, Karl took over the leadership of the family business.  As the business was growing they soon found they needed more room to meet the demands.  After looking all around the northeast, Karl found some land that met all the requirements in Montgomery, NY. So in 1981, he moved the business and his family to the place where we are located to this day. Karl spent time as a carpenter as well, so he built the facility himself!

Fun fact about Karl: He has not shaved since he left the military! He didn’t appreciate the military imposed shaving requirements so he vowed he would not ever shave again. He’s been sporting a beard ever since.
