Materials

All of our materials are 100% domestically sourced and processed at our facility in the Hudson Valley. Our leather is vegetable tanned, a traditional tanning method utilizing plant extracts as the primary tanning component.

Our veg-tan is done without toxic heavy metals while still producing a durable, long-lasting leather that will age well.

Expect Quality

Everything we produce is made by hand.  Thus, we have pride in our materials, and take every precaution to make sure our customers know exactly what to expect with their orders.

As a natural material, colors of our leathers and parchments will vary from skin to skin, batch to batch and year to year as dyes and production processes fluctuate. These are to be expected and add to the uniqueness of what we create.

Our Process

>>

Vegetable tanning - the process of using plant extracts to preserve animal skins - is one of the oldest forms of making leather. At our tannery, we take domestic hides, many from the Northeast and more and more from the Hudson Valley where we live and work. We clean, and de-hair the hides.

>>

We tan them in the unique process we have developed, mechanically soften them using some of the same machines our ancestors used, and add color in a dye bath.

>>

Finally, depending on the intended use, we can add a finish, texture, wax or pigment to create material suited for any number of uses. Or, we can leave the leather unfinished and allow it to patina naturally over time, bringing out the beauty of classic veg-tan leather.

>>

For designers and brands seeking ethical materials, our traceable leather from pasture farms is an offering not available elsewhere in the leather market. Available in the finishes of our standard portfolio or finished to custom specifications, we can tell you which farms are providing hides for the leather in this collection.
