Vegetable tanned goat, calf and deer leather splits are the by-product of skiving, or splitting skins. Regular thin splits are suede-like, very drapey and glovey, and would work best for bookbinding, garments, accessory linings, or as a backing material. The thin splits are roughly 1oz (.4mm). Leather splits typically have a surface area of 3 to 4 s.f. Extra thick splits are similar in every way except they are 3oz or more (1.2mm) or thicker and usually larger, 5 or more s.f.
