This is a whole Goat hide prepared on both sides. Abrading or “preparing” the surfaces ensures that nibs, quills and fine pointed pens glide over the surface of the hide creating a luxurious feel as your write. 

When parchment is prepared for work on both sides of the hide we call this Manuscript preparation. You will be able to write on both the front and back and have a similar feel. 

Characteristics: With its characteristic pebbly grain, goat is the most accessible and widely-used parchment we produce. Abrading the surface removes the physical texture but the visual texture remains.

Manuscript: These whole hides are hand-prepared for writing on both the grain side and the flesh side.  An all-around quality writing and painting surface, the goat hide’s natural texture offers more visual texture in your work.
